Thurmont, MD Interactive Virtual Tour
Tourism and history-focused interactive virtual tour with views of regional area, downtown, and street level + interiors.
Thurmont wanted a way to highlight its historic downtown and nearby attractions in a format that would engage visitors, support local tourism, and preserve community stories. They needed something accessible, mobile‑friendly, visually compelling , plus something they could use for grants, marketing, and visitor engagement.
The final tour gives Thurmont a modern, interactive way to showcase its heritage and attractions. It supports tourism marketing, provides a digital experience for visitors before they arrive, and offers a long‑term educational resource for schools, residents, and heritage organizations.
All media, design elements, and the full tour interface were crafted as custom content tailored to this project.

There's a self-guided GPS version of this tour!
Additionally, we created a self-guided, in-person tour that runs on visitors’ smartphones. This tour focuses on the historic downtown Thurmont area and the 11 historic buildings. All supplemental media (videos, photos, articles) produced were used in both the self-guided tour and this virtual tour. See the Walking Tour
KEY FEATURES
Interactive 3D Aerial Maps
Two custom 3D aerial views let visitors explore Greater Thurmont and Downtown from above. Each map includes clear points of interest and smooth navigation on both desktop and mobile.
360 Degree Interior and Exterior Panoramas
High resolution 360 images show downtown streets and the interiors of select historic buildings. Visitors can look around freely and experience locations they might not be able to enter in person.
Tour Guide Videos with Local Experts
Each historic site includes a short video hosted by a local historian or community member. These videos add personality and help the stories feel authentic and engaging.
Archival Photos and Short Interpretive Articles
Every point of interest includes a concise article supported by archival images. This combination provides historical context and helps visitors understand the significance of each site.
Custom Interface and Branding
The layout, colors, icons, and navigation were designed specifically for Thurmont. The interface is clear, accessible, and easy to use on any device.
FAA Approved Drone Capture
Because Thurmont is inside restricted airspace near Camp David, aerial filming required a formal FAA waiver. This demonstrates our ability to handle complex regulatory environments.
Mobile Friendly and Browser Based
The tour works on phones, tablets, and computers without requiring an app. It is ideal for trip planning, on-site exploration, and remote learning.
Useful for Tourism, Education, and Marketing
The final tour supports visitor engagement, school programs, heritage interpretation, and town marketing. It also serves as a long term digital resource for the community.
PROCESS:
The client provided historical knowledge and archival materials, while we handled all media capture, editing, interface design, and tour assembly. Their team only needed to be on‑site for a few hours during filming.
Pre‑production
The client selected 11 historic downtown locations and several regional attractions, and provided contributors to write short historical articles and supply archival materials.
We scheduled an ideal media‑capture week based on tour‑guide availability, interior access, and seasonal conditions to ensure attractive foliage for aerial views.
Because Thurmont sits within Camp David’s restricted airspace, we completed a required FAA drone‑flight waiver before production.
Production
Over three midday visits (4–6 hours each), we captured all required media. The client team was needed for only 2–3 hours per visit to provide building access and participate in tour‑guide video filming; the remaining capture work required no supervision.
Post‑production
We processed and generated 3D models for the two aerial views, then assembled a first “style draft” of the virtual tour featuring the custom interface, initial layout, and six sample points of interest (three regional, three downtown), each with a video and placeholder text. This draft was sent to the client for feedback on design, colors, and user experience.
After approval, full editing began. All 11 tour‑guide videos and the intro video were completed, and the full tour was built out and polished. The client delivered final article text and archival photos, which were integrated throughout.
We then provided the client with a review version for final notes and completed all minor revisions.
Publishing
We supplied download links for all supplemental media—videos, thumbnails, promo assets, and photos—for use beyond the tour.
The final tour was uploaded to its hosting location, and we delivered a “cheat sheet” containing the tour link, embed code, website‑embedding instructions, publishing best practices, and support contact information.
The client then embedded and publicized the tour on their website.
